More about this list

Teaching in the region comes from several directions. The Schachakademie Köln in Ehrenfeld teaches children from six to thirteen in two age groups, with one lesson a week or a programme of three, and offers a free trial lesson. The Volkshochschule Bonn runs a trial course for beginners and a course of six Friday evenings for adults, and the Kölner VHS has a free course of chess and table tennis for seniors on Wednesday afternoons in the Nippes district town hall.

Children can also learn in the city libraries: Wir spielen Schach in Mülheim and the SchachXperten in Chorweiler take children from eight, with registration. The Protestant parish of Rath-Ostheim holds chess groups at the Paula-Dürre-Haus and ran a summer chess course in July 2026, and the Schachtreff Bornheim-Uedorf welcomes beginners as well as club players on Fridays. Clubs teach too; their youth training is noted on each club entry.
